Did Medieval Churches use a star clock? There is circumstantial evidence that they did and that evidence is reflected by the Mason's in the stone architecture of Lincoln Cathedral, England. This beautiful cathedral is the seat of the Holy See and is built, like most in the shape of a cross. The Cathedral, built on a hill in 1097 has a Rose window which was added in the 13th Century in the north transept. The Rose Window, thus named after the navigators compass rose measuring the wind directions in ancient portolans, is called "The Deacons Eye" and faces north. The word deacon is derived from the Greek word of diakonos meaning servant or messenger, in old slang it meant to deal with deceptively : Webster's College Dictionary The Deacons Eye from inside the north transept looking north. This window is beautifully decorated with stained glass, but should the glass be removed and if you stood in the right position within the cathedral at night, you would see the constellations of northern star clock revolving through the stone circles. If you look you will see the four large circles, each divided in the manner of a Celtic cross denoting the seasons. Around the edges are the months of the year. From outside the cathedral you can see how the window is perfectly designed like the Celtic cross to measure time with the revolving northern stars. The Northern star clock and Draconis through the Rose window of Lincoln Cathedral Because of the alignment of the Cathedral slightly south east and the stained glass, it is unlikely that this window is any more than symbolic and a cultural memory of the capabilities of the cross, although there is a working sundial on the face of the South Transept.
